People have been living and working in the Cairngorms since 8100 BC. Our Gaelic place names give a fascinating insight into the relationships between people and places in our Cairngorms. Some names were inspired by an event in history, others were influenced by the landscape. To walk in the Cairngorms and enjoy these names provides additional insight into our predecessors’ way of life. The Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore allows visitors to experience Highland existence from the 1700s to the 1970s. The Victorian Heritage Trail highlights some of the historic places that make Royal Deeside such a magnificent place.
